New beginnings

106. Top Five Things I LOVED This Week:

1. My immune system. There is truly nothing I value more right now than feeling healthy again after being struck down with a horrific cold.
2. The loud gasp my husband and I let out when we saw a front door mat with a big anchor on it. Everyone within a 5 meter radius at Freedom turned to face us.
3. How kindly forgiving it is painting with watercolours.
4. Eating a delicious lamb roast with vegies at 4:30pm on a rainy Sunday arvo.
5. Seeing Baby Caller up on the ultrasound screen just chilling out sucking its thumb!!

PS. Well I told you I’d have an announcement for you didn’t I… Yes you read correctly!! Emma the naturopath is growing a little human! It’s the size of a lemon and has been cooking for just over 14 weeks now -hello second trimester. Our little Aquarian is due 2nd Feb (my 30th birthday and our 3rd wedding anniversary)! Have you been wondering about all the baking recipes I’ve been posting lately? (aka. nesting).

Never fear, the ‘Essential Health Coffs’ Facebook page will not be bombarded with pregnancy/baby related paraphernalia. An exciting new segment titled *MATERNAL MONDAYS* will be starting tomorrow for those who want to chat about being up the duff and take a little peak into my new chapter!

I fell in love with the following Deepak Chopra excerpt from his book The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life:

“If you obsess over whether you are making the right decision, you are basically assuming that the universe will reward you for one thing and punish you for another.

The universe has no fixed agenda. Once you make any decision, it works around that decision. There is no right or wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action that you experience.

If this sounds too mystical, refer again to the body. Every significant vital sign—body temperature, heart rate, oxygen consumption, hormone level, brain activity, and so on—alters the moment you decide to do anything… decisions are signals telling your body, mind, and environment to move in a certain direction.”

-Deepak Chopra

Let’s keep moving forward together.

*MATERNAL MONDAYS*

THE FIRST TRIMESTER: Finding out

The pregnancy test lit up as soon as I managed to awkwardly pee on it.

“I’m pregnant…” I said out aloud to no one. “I’m pregnant… I’m pregnant... I’m pregnant…”

It wasn’t an exclamation. It wasn’t fearful. They were just two words I’d never said in the same sentence before.

I was home from work that day. I think Ellen was on. I walked back out into the lounge room and sat down on the bean bag, pregnancy test in tow. I sat it on the coffee table next to me and watched it out of the corner of my eye.

“I’m pregnant... I’m pregnant... I’m pregnant...”

Those two words felt odd and surreal. But also made me feel incredibly excited and giggly! It fele so fragile, like if I sneezed, that it might jump out!

It is still unfathomable to me, that my baby grew from the size of a poppy seed to a peach in 3 months, completely made of building blocks from, well, me! Each week I would read things out aloud to my husband like “Listen to this honey!! This week, our baby is growing ear canals!” It absolutely fascinates me.

I’ll leave you with an excerpt from Kaz Cooke’s hilarious book Up the Duff about home pregnancy tests…

“What always happened was more like sticking a thimble under a waterfall and then snatching it out again and finding that, although you had wee on your hand, the outside of the jar, your hair, the cuffs of your trousers and some articles in another room entirely, you’d managed to miss the jar.”

*Please feel free to share how you felt in YOUR first trimester and what thoughts ran through your head?

PS. *THANKYOU* all so much for your lovely comments on the Top 5 yesterday, you kind humans :)

107. Top Five Things I LOVED This Week:

1. Eating the best (giant) passionfruit ever that my parents brought back for me from far north Queensland. I literally found myself grinning after I’d finished eating it.
2. Baked beans on toast.
3. The old lady who literally skipped into my shop yesterday announcing “I don’t need vitamins today love! I’m still on a high from last night’s win”!! She was decked out head to toe in Rabittohs gear. Even her matching hand bag was red and green.
4. Mum bringing over a “menu” and a collaged card that I had made dad for his birthday when I was little. Every Mother’s Day/Father’s Day/birthday I would make my parent’s a menu so I could prepare them breakfast in bed. I went to town with the glitter pens.
5. Nayyirah Waheed’s simple and delicate poetry. I’ll leave you with a few of my favourites below.

Emma the Naturopath xx

PS.

“she asked,
‘you are in love,
what does love look like’
to which i replied,
‘like everything i’ve ever lost
come back to me”

“chemistry
is
you touching my arm
and
it
setting fire to my mind”

"i am mine,
before I am ever anyone else’s"

*MATERNAL MONDAYS*

If you were to plant a veggie patch, it’s beneficial to prepare the soil, do some research into what plants will flourish that particular season and chose the right fertiliser for them before sowing the seeds right?

I feel incredibly passionate about PRECONCEPTION CARE: getting your body (and mind) “ready” for pregnancy. Not just you, but your partner as well. I know there are a lot of giggles at this concept because realistically not every baby is planned and some conceptions begin after a boozy night on the dance floor! And that’s fine too!

I truly believe that because my husband and I did preconception care for at least 6 months, we were able to conceive straight away and I’ve had such a smooth pregnancy so far (touch wood!). I saw our herbalist who specialises in hormones and fertility, every 2 months and my husband went a couple of times too.

Conception through to birth is such an intricate web of reactions in the body which can always benefit from support. You don’t need to wait until there is an issue with falling/staying pregnant to do something about it. Or to get to a stage where you start trying and then realise there’s an underlying issue.

The sperm and egg will be a blueprint of your baby’s future health. So this is the time for both you and your partner to get super healthy to iron out your allergies, gut issues, psoriasis, anxiety, or whatever so you can minimise the chance of passing these negative health issues on to your bubba.

Your preconception practitioner (eg herbalist, naturopath, nutritionist) will ensure you’re taking the right supplements for YOU, not just any cheap tub of multi’s from the supermarket They will order you the correct blood tests and go over them with a fine toothed comb. It’s a time to clean up the diet, achieve a healthy weight, swap to natural products for your body/home and learn to manage stress better. Also looking at any medications you are both taking, like the Pill.

There are no guarantees that you will definitely get pregnant by doing preconception care. But it helps to put the odds in your favour. What do you think about preconception care? Did you and your partner look into it before having a baby or did you get a lovely surprise?

For anyone interested, my herbalist is Jayne Elder in Coffs Harbour. One of the most incredibly knowledgeable, supportive and joyful women I’ve ever met.

How beautiful is this yoga card I picked this morning. My husband goes “Oh look, it’s you!”

On the back it says:

TRANSITION: You are changing. Say goodbye to the old and embrace new beginnings with a fresh approach.

Malasana Pose Preparation
(Garland Pose)

When I was driving to work this morning I was thinking about how many things have been shifting for myself and a lot of people around me lately. An abundance of pregnancies, births, passing overs, weddings, resignations, new career directions, moving house. It made me appreciate how BRAVE people are to take a chance and improve their current situations.

I wondered if there was some sort of big planetary energetic shift going on, but I think I’m putting it down to the new season approaching. With only two weeks left of winter I think it’s pretty safe to say that we’re ready for some warm air, bright flowers and new beginnings, which is what Spring is all about: old chapters closing, new chapters opening.

Now is a perfect time to decide what is not serving your life in a positive way and make a change for the better. Don’t be afraid, we’re all doing it!

-Marianne Williamson

Are there new doors opening in your world at the moment?

108. Top Five Things I LOVED This Week:

1. Waking up in the middle of the night to find that my husband was sleeping holding my baby bump –which has been making a loud and proud appearance these last couple of weeks!
2. My fave Insta right now: Yoga213.
3. Using Frankie posters as wrapping paper.
4. Spending a rainy Saturday morning in bed together going through all the photos from our Japan and Hawaii trip on the laptop (well over 1000) then choosing our faves which we printed and put into albums.
5. The fact that when we go to my parents’ house for dinner, mum makes not one, but TWO desserts. Gluten free blackberry crumble cake for after dinner and then chocolate dipped strawberries to have with our cups of tea.

PS.
“Stretching herself too thin.
She breaks her connections.
Staying too busy.
She has no time.
Doing for others.
She neglects herself.
Defining herself only through others.
She loses her own definition

-The Tao for Women

You gotta look after number one. I always give my clients the analogy that when a plane is going down, you have to put your own oxygen mask on before assisting others.

This week I’m getting back on track after being so snowed under with work recently. I’m going to a new meditation class tomorrow night. I’m seeing my herbalist. I’ve done my healthy food prep for the week. I’ve written my to-do list so I can manage my time better and have some quality time not doing anything but looking after ME! I can’t wait

Give yourself the oxygen you need this week.

Go bake a cake

102. Top Five Things I LOVED This Week:

1. Finally learning not to say my pin out aloud as I type each number into the eftpos machine.
2. Being the little spoon.
3. Learning the true definition of “house proud”. My husband and I moved into the brand new house we bought. We are so in love and content with our home. I’ve had countless moments like on that roof ad where the guy goes out to get the paper in his undies and ends up staring happily in a daze at his house while all the neighbours look on. However I’ve been fully clothed.
4. Isla Collective stripey-ness.
5. The funny moments of living in a new house like stumbling around in the dark in the middle of the night trying to find the bathroom not knowing where the hell you are. Or turning every single switch at the wall on each time you walk into every room to figure out which one will turn the light on.

PS. Does anyone else love HONY (Humans of New York)? I first heard about the project on Triple J’s Hack about a year ago. A fantastic photographer captures portraits and does a mini interview with people he sees on the street in NY. I follow it on Insta and Facebook. They have just been SO GOOD lately!

This week there was a photo of a middle aged woman standing next to this vibrantly dressed older woman with a walking stick wearing bright red lipstick and a gorgeous smile. The caption read:

“What's your favorite thing about your mother?"

"She loves life more than anyone I've ever known. I hope she doesn't mind me telling you this, but recently she's had some health problems. And her health got so bad at one point, she called me and said: 'I was starting to wonder if there was any reason to go on. But then I had the most delicious pear!'

True inspiration.

How good is snail mail! There was a big parcel waiting for me in the post box this morning on my way to work.

My mother has always been the most thoughtful and selfless human I know. She sent a beautifully soft jumper she had been knitting my husband and just so I wouldn't feel left out, she sent me a little set of gardening affirmation cards! I just pulled this one out.

Enjoy this fresh new week. It's going to be a great one!

Hello to all the pregnant mamas out there!

Just a gentle reminder to keep an eye on your vitamin D levels this time of year as you are your bubba's only source of D while its chilling on the inside.

Optimal vitamin D levels will help bub grow strong bones and teeth, help the absorption of calcium and phosphorus as well as protecting against diabetes and heart disease.Vitamin D will also give your immune system a fighting chance this winter!

Aim to go for a walk daily in the sunshine and incorporate vitamin D-rich foods into your diet like free range eggs and organic butter. When looking at supplements, make your choice based on quality. I'm a fan of BioCeuticals D3 Drops Forte. Ask your GP for a blood test to monitor your levels.

Enjoy the sunshine!

*LOCALS SUPPORTING LOCALS*

I'm a massive fan of beeswax candles. Who wouldn't want their house smelling like honey!?

I met a lovely couple from Bucca (10 mins north of Coffs) in the shop recently. The husband is a beekeeper and his wife uses the wax to create gorgeous candles!

Needless to say, we are so happy to be stocking a variety of beeswax candles (starting from $1.75 for tea lights). When the bees come out of hibernation in Spring (learn something every day!) we will also be stocking their local honey!

"I don't feel very much like Pooh today", said Pooh.

"There there" said Piglet."I'll bring you tea and honey til you do".

-A.A. Milne

103. Top Five Things I LOVED This Week:

1. Chet Faker’s cover of Lover (You Don’t Treat Me No Good) for Like a Version. Honey to my ears.
2. Reclining on my gorgeous new purple lotus bolster from @O
3. The cheeky possum that ran out in front of me while I was walking home with the groceries the other night. I got such a fright that I dropped the banana I was eating (um, or I MAY have thrown it at him), then he picked it up and ran off with it!
4. Baking my head off this morning for our Sunday picnic with the fam: zucchini slice and carrot cake. Sharing the recipe with you all this week.
5. My oversized ‘Good Morning Sunshine’ mug that has a picture of a flamingo wearing sunglasses standing next to a pineapple. A dear girlfriend gave it to me for my birthday this year. As soon as I wake up I fill it with milky chai and sit in a patch of sunshine that hits our courtyard at about 7:35 each morning.

PS. My routine has been totally out of whack for at least 6 weeks I reckon. But the dust has settled and my intention for this coming week is to put some positive lifestyle rituals back into place. I truly believe that we are only as strong as our daily habits.

Welcome back green juices, beach walks, my regular yoga practice, new recipes and journaling. Things that bring me back home to myself.

Have you been off track recently? Have a think about what you need MORE of in your life right now. You know those things you know you SHOULD be doing but you don’t really get around to doing? Let’s do them this week!!

So I made the BEST CAKE of my life on Sunday. Big claim, I know. Adapted from my fave cookbook ‘Wholefoods’ by Jude Blereau (page 289 for those of you playing along at home). It’s as if a carrot cake and fruit cake made love. There’s an interesting visualisation for you… Dairy free and gluten free. A lot of natural sugars so share it around. Really dense and moist. Perfectly accompanied by a hot tea and good book.

CARROT CAKE
2 cups gluten free self raising flour
1 cup coconut sugar
½ cup shredded or desiccated coconut
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp nutmeg
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup sultanas
4 cups (400g) grated carrot
3 pineapple rings, roughly chopped
¼ cup (60ml) pineapple juice from the can
½ cup olive oil
4 eggs, lightly beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract

METHOD
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees.
2. Combine flour, sugar, coconut, spices, walnuts and sultanas in a large bowl and mix lightly.
3. Mix together the remaining ingredients in a separate bowl then add to the rest of the mixture.
4. Line a cake tin with baking paper or lightly grease with coconut oil. I divided the mixture between a round 24 cm spring form tin and a loaf tin. Bake for about 1 hr and 15 mins or until the center is cooked when tested with a skewer. If the top starts to brown too quickly, cover with foil. Leave cakes to cool for 15 mins in the tin then turn out onto a wire rack. I actually turned my super powered oven down half way through, so just monitor.

Enjoy!

When my baby, when my baby smiles at me...

I just got back from a practitioner seminar on fertility and preconception care where I wildly wrote seven pages of notes.

Here’s a handful of interesting facts:

*65% of miscarriages are due to poor sperm quality which is why it is super important for BOTH partners to see a naturopath for a proper pre-conception care program.

*Sperm’s biggest enemy is oxidative stress such as smoking, drinking, excessive exercise and stress. This can be neutralised by a diet high in brightly coloured fruit and vegies like blueberries, spinach, red capsicum and carrots.

*Men: take your mobile phones out of your pockets!! It’s affecting your sperm quality.

*A miscarriage can deplete a woman’s body as much as one and a half pregnancies would. So it’s necessary to wait for at least 6 months until trying again.

*The rate of miscarriage without pre-conception care is 22% as opposed to 6% when pre-conception care was preformed for at least 3 months.

*3 months of pre-conception care can make the health of a woman’s eggs 2 years younger which is incredibly valuable in older women.

*Iron levels should be tested 2-3 times throughout the pregnancy to avoid anaemia. This will ensure you have plenty of energy when you need it most.

*The healthy amount of weight to gain during pregnancy is between 10 to 15 kilos. It is not the time to be eating Mars Bars and doughnuts.

*Morning sickness is most rampant in the morning because blood sugar levels are at their absolute lowest. Snack on small regular protein-rich meals to ease this.

*Some basic pre-conception care tips include eating EIGHT vegies and THREE pieces of fruit each day, daily exercise and sun exposure, practising positive stress management techniques and taking a good quality multivitamin and high strength fish oil.

Baby talk.

Planning on having a bubba? Well it’s safe to say that they will come regardless of whether they are planned or not. I feel that it is our duty of care as women of a child bearing age to be prepared to give our future babies the best shot at a healthy life. Which is why today’s topic is FOLATE.

A recent study has shown that women who took a daily multivitamin supplement (especially one specific for pregnancy) had a strongly reduced risk of having a child with autism. Women in the study who did not take pre-natal (before pregnancy) vitamins had an estimated risk of having a child with autism up to seven times greater than in women who did take prenatal vitamins.

Folate/folic acid (vitamin B9) is the key player in the development of a healthy foetal nervous system and studies show that folic acid supplements have the potential to prevent up to 70 percent of neural tube defects such as spina bifida when taken before pregnancy and in the first trimester.

Folic acid is found in barley, beans, eggs, green leafy vegies, lentils, sprouts and soybeans. It’s also found in liver and other organ meats. Whatever tickles your fancy... We don’t judge here at Essential Health.

Take into consideration that folate levels are depleted by the Pill, alcohol and many medications. Deficiency signs include anaemia, fatigue, cervical dysplasia, forgetfulness, headaches, irritability and loss of libido. Does this tick any boxes for you?

When choosing a multi for pre-natal care, pregnancy and lactation don’t just grab any old vitamin that’s on special at the supermarket. Ask your naturopath about a good quality supplement like BioCeuticals InNatal plus Iron which doesn’t contain magnesium oxide like some cheap brands. It also has a decent amount of iodine which is super important for brain development. We need around 400 micrograms a day of folate and 800 micrograms if you’re pregnant or lactating.

How much folate is in your multivitamin?

PS. Rule of three again.
1. I read the research article which inspired me to write the post.
2. A customer came in who’s partner has post-natal depression.
3. As I was finishing writing the post, the local naturopath who specialises in fertility dropped off some brochures.
