Choose happiness

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:
1. The anticipation all week for a much needed massage on Friday afternoon.
2. Two 11 hour sleeps in one week.
3. Deliriously stumbling to my car after a workout to find that my key wouldn’t work. Figuring I had used my shop key, I tried my actual car key. When that didn’t work either I looked down and realised that it wasn’t my car. Nor did it actually look anything like my car. Hello hypoglycaemia.
4. Stringing up fairy lights in the bathroom. When I have a bath all the twinkles reflect in the water.
5. The hot pink sunrise on Friday morning. It made the surrounding clouds look like pink fluffy fairy floss. Needless to say the rest of my day way pretty wonderful.

PS. A super-duper shout out goes to my brilliant (and insane) husband who completed his first marathon today. 45km (5.5 hours) along soft sand beaches, over headlands and through rivers during a howling southerly. All in aid of raising money for The Stroke Foundation. He told me that whenever he felt like it was all too much he thought of his patients in the hospital who can’t even stand up from their chair which reminded him of how grateful he was to be able to use his legs.

Count your blessings this week.
Banana berry muffins

Ingredients:
2 cups wholemeal spelt flour
½ cup brown sugar (or 6 x diced organic dates)
 ½ cup rolled oats
 ½ cup desiccated coconut
3 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp baking powder
A pinch of pink Himalayan sea salt (Celtic salt is fine too)
2 ripe bananas, mashed with a fork
¾ cup milk (I used malt-free soy)
½ cup plain Greek yoghurt
½ cup of berries (I used frozen organic raspberries)
If you’re cheeky you could add ½ cup of dark chocolate chips or cacao nibs!

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.
2. In one large bowl mix together the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, oats, cinnamon, baking powder, coconut, salt).
3. In another bowl mix together the wet ingredients (bananas, milk, yoghurt).
4. Combine both bowls, stirring until mixed. Then fold through the berries.
5. Use some coconut oil on a paper towel to grease muffin tray. Top each muffin with a sprinkle of rolled oats for added prettiness.
6. Pop them in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the top bounces back when you gently press down on them.
*Store in an airtight container. Makes 15 muffins.

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:
1. The relief when the saltwater that has been stuck in your ear finally leaks out. It was a minor consolation for surfing with dolphins today.
2. The sights, smells and sounds while walking through Scott’s Head Caravan Park on Anzac Day: kids tearing around on their bikes, sausages sizzling and the waft of shampoo at the shower block. Ahh the memories.
3. Four whole days off in a row. Unheard of! Salt water, sunshine, mugs of tea, gardening, reading, cooking and sooo much sleep =food for my soul.
4. Sharing a wildly colourful fruit salad on the beach with my gorgeous pregnant friend.
5. Knitting lessons from my husband’s grandmother. She even gave me a book from the 70s full of knitting patterns (think oversized sloppy joes with cockatoos on them with pom pom sheep as pockets). I threaten my husband that I’ll make him one if he doesn’t behave…

After spending rearranging my work days this week so that I had a few days off in a row I feel so refreshed and rejuvenated. A far cry from the stressed person with the sore throat I was last week. It allowed me to do all the things that bring me back home to myself. I encourage you to do the same.

What scares you?

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:
1. Driving past Abundance Street in Terrigal and wishing that was my address.
2. Cutting into a boiled egg and finding out the yolk is the perfect consistency. Love it when that happens!
3. Painting wriggly three year old’s toes.
4. Breakfast at the Oldfield’s: the kettle boiling, coffee machine whirring, the smell of hot cross buns, the toaster popping, the scraping of butter on toast, kiddies giggling, the Rip Curl Pro heats playing on the laptop.
5. Homemade minestrone soup with quinoa, fresh parsley and a dollop of cottage cheese on top. It tasted even better at breakfast the next two mornings.

PS. Place a few pot plants around your house to help purify the air.

Hmmm… Can somebody tell me why this is?

When a man comes into my shop and buys a bottle of liquid eg. fish oil or cherry juice extract, I inform them of the correct dosage and offer them a free measuring cup and they reply “Nah I just swig it from the bottle”.

Or they buy some powder eg. Ultra Muscleze or vitamin C, and I’ll tell them to take one teaspoon and they reply “Oh I just shake it into my glass”.

I watch my own husband take his supplements and he does the same thing.

When I tell women to take one teaspoon they say “A heaped teaspoon of just level?”

What’s up with rebelling against measuring? Don’t want to dirty a spoon? Enlighten me gentlemen?

PS. You are welcome for the Matt Corby eye candy to put a pep in your step.

Snack like a naturopath… Well, 80% of the time!

This is my “go to” snack when I’m feeling peckish at home.
Grab a large mug and add:
A tin of fish (tuna/salmon/sardines/whatever)

Finely dice:
Red capsicum
Red onion
Celery
A pickled gherkin
Fresh chilli
Parsley or basil from the garden

Add in:
A squeeze of lemon or lime
Some cracked pepper
A sneaky dollop of good quality mayo

And mix it all in!

Buy plain fish in olive oil rather than buying the “mango chilli” or whatever flavour. Add your own twist. I buy the Fish 4 Ever brand. It’s sustainably line caught and in organic olive oil. But I’m a fish snob.

Great on corn thins and rice crackers with some sliced tomato and sprouts, use vegie sticks like snow peas or parsnip as dippers, mix through some cooked brown rice or quinoa, add to a salad wrap, a baked potato topping, add a poached egg on top or just eat it with a fork straight from the bowl!!

What’s your fave quick and healthy snack?

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:
1. Asking a customer of ours if she knew a good electrician and she exclaimed “Yes… and he’s an Aries!” Well he did a good job so I suppose Aries make good electricians!
2. Reversing my car into my husband’s van because I was distracted perving on him without his shirt on.
3. A brand new pair of ksubi jeans wrapped in black tissue. Thanks Edwards!
4. Receiving an email from a lovely naturopathic student in the States who if a fan of the Facebook page/blog and shared late week’s Sunshine Bites recipe with her friends over there. So touching! Talk about sharing the love!!
5. When someone told me they were blood type C.

PS. Come into the shop and have your zinc levels tested for FREE!!

“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it”. Michelangelo

I learnt a life lesson at personal training last week. Who knew…

We’d been meeting up for about a month or so and my trainer asked me how I was finding our sessions so far.

I told her that I’d been enjoying them but I was really struggling with the cardio section of our sessions. “I’m just not a very good runner”.

For some reason I expected her to say “Well let’s just ease off a bit and go easy on the running. Actually let’s just not worry about it and focus on something else”.

Her reply: “Well we’ll ramp it up and go for longer and increase the intensity”. Umm… excuse me?!

It reminded me how easy it is to shy away from a challenging situation that you’re not good at or that scares you. It’s a habit to continually just do the things you’re good at and turn a blind eye to the challenges that will put you out of your comfort zone but ultimately make you grow. It’s comforting for the ego.

Like when studying for an anatomy and physiology exam at uni, I’d keep revising the digestive and nervous systems instead of the integumentary or musculoskeletal systems which were harder to memorise. Or in my daily yoga practice, how I focus my routine around the poses I’m good at and brush over the challenging ones by only offering them half the amount of time.

It’s so confronting yet liberating when you uncover a subconscious pattern about yourself. When you acknowledge what it is you do, you can start breaking barriers and mindfully move forward. What scares you? When was the last time you put yourself out there?

What I actually look like when I run...

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:

1. Having the patience to cook homemade chicken, leek, asparagus and thyme risotto. Always worth getting RSI in your wrists from 45 mins of stirring.
2. Catching an old nana bopping along to a Hilltop Hoods track on my Triple J ‘Like A Version’ cd.
3. The sweetness of an organic zucchini.
4. Breaking my personal record during my PT session for planking. I was silently cleansing my chakras.
5. Driving past a plant nursery and seeing the sign “Have a dirty weekend”.

Emma the Naturopath xx

PS. Have a beautiful long wkend everyone! I have been wondering this week how many of those mini Cadbury eggs I can eat before I lose my naturopathic accreditation ;)

Are you a long-time vegan? New vegan, trying to be vegan, or just curious to find out more about veganism? Then Coffs Coast Vegan Social Group is for you!
Call Nat for more info 0416 122536.

The truth: you can not and will not look like a Lorna Jane model if you’re working out properly.

Your face will be lobster red, you’ll be dripping sweat, looking pretty unco and unable to talk and breathe at the same time.

When I get home from my weekly person training session all I want is a bowl of porridge.

This is my post-workout refuel:

In a small saucepan add ½ a cup of rolled oats and cover with filtered water and cook on the lowest heat for 10 mins. Then splash in your milk of choice (mine is malt-free soy milk) and stir till creamy.

Remove from heat and add 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 Tbsp chia seeds, ground cinnamon, a scattering of frozen blueberries, a swirl of coconut nectar. If there’s some leftover coconut cream in the fridge from a curry the night before I’ll put a slurp of that in as well. Loco for the coco!

Packed with magnesium, B vitamins, fibre, healthy oils, protein and complex carbs. Then I enjoy my endorphin high for the rest of the day!

So I made these little pups today. They are the perfect accompaniment to my pot of rosehip tea on this rainy Autumn afternoon.

SUNSHINE BITES

Ingredients:
1 cup raw cashews
1 cup dried figs
¾ cup desiccated coconut
Zest of one lime
Chia seeds to coat

Directions:
1. Soak cashews for a few hours. Drain and rinse.
2. Cut figs into quarters and cover with water for 30 mins to soften them.
3. In a food processor combine all ingredients and whiz until combined.
4. Spoon out about a dessert spoon size amount of mixture at a time and roll into a ball with your hands. Pour some chia seeds into a bowl and roll the balls around to coat.

Store in the fridge or freezer in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. Makes 24. Great for lunch boxes, road trips, pre-workout, morning tea, kiddies parties, something sweet after dinner.

Gluten free, dairy free, raw, vegan and I made sure all the ingredients were organic. Packed to the brim with magnesium and fibre!!

Generous hearts

This week at work I have witnessed so much care given from others. My love today goes out to all the carers (paid and unpaid) who selflessly put other’s needs before their own simply to improve another person’s quality of life. Is there no greater gift?

Those people who work a 9-5 job and still visit their elderly parent in a nursing home every day, even just for 10 minutes.

Those who do everything in their power to help a family member battling a serious disease.

Those who work in hospitals who spend their days looking after people in their most vulnerable state where just a warm smile and small chat can make all the difference.

Those parents who miss a day’s wage to nurse their sick child back to health.

It warms my heart to know that there are so many beautiful people with such tremendously generous hearts in this world.

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:

1. My dream last night: I dreamt that my heart was a cold stone with the word LOVE written on it. Then I got some soap and a scrubbing brush and said nice things to it as I cleaned it. When I finished with it my heart was pink, soft and glowing. I always have these sort of dreams when I take a flower essence...
2. Biting the bullet and finally “investing” in sensible work shoes with proper arch support. I may look like I’m off to second grade but my legs no longer kill by the end of the day!
3. How friendly chia seeds are. They just want to hang out with you all day in your teeth, the kitchen sponge, the bottom of the blender…
4. The way my left hip clicks back in to place during trikonasana (triangle pose in yoga).
5. Having a bath before breakfast every day this week. Just because.

JAPANESE HEALTHY HABITS!!

1. Eat with chopsticks: it’ll stop you scoffing down your food and is a hell of a lot more hygienic than eating with your fingers. Plus it’s hilarious when you’re learning!

2. Add fermented foods/pickled vegies: encourages the production of your own digestive secretions and enhances the growth of friendly bacteria in your gut. Make your own to avoid preservatives.

3. Drink organic green tea: the flavonoids (antioxidants) protect your cells from free radical damage to slow the ageing process and protect fro cancer. Green tea also increases your metabolism, makes your skin glow and promotes detoxification.

4. Warm up with miso soup: such a nourishing little gem! It helps to recolonise your gut with the good bugs that boost your immunity. It’s a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals that support your nervous system. Add shitake mushies for an extra immunity boost!

You’ll be fighting like a Japanese ninja in no time!

I sacrificed my Wed night yoga class last night and went to a ridiculously informative business strategies seminar. Glad I did.

One line the speaker said particularly stood out:

*A winner is a loser who never gave up*

Who overindulged over Easter…? Me too! Cakes, choccy, late nights, no routine, no exercise, wheat, dairy… but sooooo much FUN!!

Let’s start fresh again this week!!!

Here are 5 things I’ll be doing this week to get back on track:
1. Getting outside and moving to make the most of the last week of daylight savings!
2. Making fresh vegie juice such as carrot, apple, celery, ginger, parsley, apple and beetroot.
3. Putting 1 tsp of Synergy spirulina powder in my coconut water.
4. Drinking spiced dandelion tea.
5. Early to bed, early to rise.

Welcome to April everyone!!

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:

1. How absence makes the heart grow fonder. Absence also allows you to leave your crap everywhere and then do a mad rush to clean up the day he arrives home!
2. Sweating it out at an early morning personal training session then stumbling down the beach track with my jelly legs and diving into the ocean semi-clothed. I sat on the beach in the Autumn sunshine on an endorphin high. Just admiring how blue the sky was and how grateful I am to have arms and legs.
3. Buying a bunch of fresh dill at the farmers market and adding it to my fish cakes, scrambled eggs and cottage cheese on corn thins.
4. Being reminded to take care of myself from HEAD to TOE by my wonderful reflexologist Trista Shanahan at Ayurvedic Skin Care & Reflexology Fusion. Treat yourself to a warm oil Indian head massage and your hair will shine like the sun.

Megan Gale's beauty secret...

And if you're quiet enough, you'll hear it...

*THE ESSENTIALS*

I remember a few years ago a radio interviewer asked Megan Gale why the water in her water bottle was dark green. “CHLOROPHYLL” she replied. The next day it was like the Boxing Day sales as a stampede of people raced into the health food shop I was working at to grab a bottle and the shelves were empty by 9:15am.

Rightfully so! CHLOROPHYLL is a blood cleanser. Our cells naturally produce waste as they go about their jobs. This can build up and make us feel sluggish. CHLOROPHYLL flushes out these wastes and as a result we get a pep in our step.

CHLOROPHYLL has a molecular structure similar to our body’s haemoglobin which is vital to the health of our blood. It helps to rebuild and replenish our red blood cells, boosting our energy and increasing our wellbeing.

I recommend chlorophyll to people:
-with skin issues (eczema, psoriasis, weird rashes, acne)
-with bad breath or body odour who need a subtle detox
-with high acid levels
-low energy
-just need some gentle nutrition (the elderly or “I don’t like vegetables” people)

The result = Glowing skin, clear eyes, a newfound energy and a more alkalised system. Happy days.

Add 3 tsp (15ml) of the the green liquid to your water bottle and sip throughout the day. It tastes kind of minty and is less than $15 for 500ml. Easy.

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:

1. How going for a walk on the beach after work can make you feel so refreshed like it’s a brand new day.
2. Making spirals and love hearts while drizzling honey into my chai.
3. An hour and a half chats on the phone with one of my fave girlfriends.
4. A beautiful homemade dream catcher from my crafty sister in law.
5. The fat stack of magazines they sit in front of you at the hair dressers.

PS. There are only a couple of weeks left of day light savings! Turn off the TV and observe all the LIVING you can fit into your life! Swim at the beach while the water’s still warm, make bliss balls, start planting your new autumn vegie patch, cook a new recipe for dinner, grow alfalfa sprouts, put on a face mask, go walking with a friend or create a new vision board!!!

Think beautifully

"What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday and our present thoughts build our life tomorrow: our life is the creation of our minds" -Buddha.

Let's think beautiful thoughts today and visualise our bright futures!

Genetics are the gun, lifestyle is the trigger.

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:

1. Ticking another thing off of my New Year’s Resolutions list: I’m doing a yoga retreat in Bali in June!!!!
2. The smell of beeswax candles. They smell so delicious like sweet honey that I could eat them! If you find teeth marks in our candles at work, you’ll know that curiosity got the better of me...
3. The lyrics to India Arie’s Strength, Courage and Wisdom.
4. A new red dress. It made a debut at last Friday night’s date night.
5. Fresh coriander, chilli and lime. What a combination!

PS. Take time this week to turn on your favourite song and DANCE like nobody’s watching!! Just close the curtains first ;)

I was stoked to be interviewed by the gorgeous Jasmine List from One conscious breath about what makes me tick.

My husband claims that Jasmine teaches the best yoga class he has ever been to and my bestie said that it was the most relaxedshe'd been in a year. I'm into the music she plays during the class. We were grooving out to Xavier Rudd and India Arie last night.

Jasmine teaches a grounding Vinyasa Flow yoga class 12-12:45pm on Wed at The Professional Centre (9 Park Ave) and 6-7pm on Thurs at Zen Shiatsu Centre (78 Bray St).
