How to shop like a naturopath

DIY ALMOND MILK AND BLISS BALLS

I made almond milk over the wkend! I decided that I had better things to do than spend time standing in the milk aisle of the supermarket every week trying to compare all the different brands. It was so much easier than I thought it would be and I already had the ‘equipment’ at home. The leftover ‘nut meat’ is ideal for making bliss balls.

ALMOND MILK

You will need:
1 cup almonds
Filtered water
A blender
A fine rice sieve
A glass jar with a lid (at least 750ml)

1. Soak 1 cup of almonds in some filtered water. Leave overnight.
2. Rinse and drain in the morning and put almonds in a blender.
3. Add 3 cups of filtered water and blend for about a minute. After you've tried this a few times you can experiment with the almond/water ratio to achieve the consistency of milk that you like.
4. Sit the empty jar in the sink and hold the sieve above it. Slowly pour in the milk, about ¾ cup at a time. I use the back of a spoon or my fingers to push it through the sieve. Pop the ‘nut meat’ in a spare bowl, then keep pouring the milk through until it is all done.
5. Pop the lid on the jar and store in the fridge for 2-3 days.

BLISS BALLS

You will need:
A food processor
A bowl for rolling balls in chia seeds
An airtight container for storage

1 x pkt of organic dates from the fruit/veg section of the supermarket. Has about 8 dates in there.
Leftover ‘nut meat’ or just soak 1 cup of almonds overnight in water then drain
1 cup cashews (ideally soaked overnight)
½ cup coconut oil
½ cup oats (leave out if coeliac or substitute with quinoa flakes)
½ cup raw cacao powder
½ cup LSA
½ cup shredded coconut
2 Tbsp protein powder (I use vanilla pea protein powder)
1 cup chia seeds for coating (or use desiccated coconut or LSA)

1. Throw everything (except chia seeds) in a food processor and blitz til combined thoroughly. If the mixture is too dry add more coconut oil or a fresh banana. If it is too wet add oats, shredded coconut or LSA.
2. Pour chia seeds into a bowl. Roll into mixture into small balls, coat in chia seeds then place in storage container. Continue till all mixture is gone.

Top 5 Things I LOVED This Wk:

1. A faux mink leopard print blanket.
2. Button mushies, garlic and parsley cooked in salty organic butter on spelt toast.
3. The interesting things you find whilst spring cleaning: old love letters, the shell necklace I used to live in when I was 18 living in Byron, my FAVE bikini that I hadn’t seen since the summer of 2011.
4. My current morning juice combo: pine, mint, green apple, cucumber, lime, wheatgrass juice.
5. Finding the charm bracelet I had when I was little (yet another score from spring cleaning). There was a little silver apple on it because I wanted to be a naturopath when I grew up. I took the apple charm into the jewellers this week and had it made into a necklace.

PS. Here’s one of my fave quotes by Marianne Williamson. Live loudly people!!

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.

We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.
Your playing small
Does not serve the world.

There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us;
It's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we're liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.

I arrived home tonight from another whirlwind day in the shop to this touching email from one of my clients. It warmed my heart and reminded me that I am following the right path xx

"Thank you, Emma. I really appreciated your calm, attentive, and dare I say, quite angelic attitude. You gave the impression of really loving your clients".

HOW TO SHOP LIKE A NATUROPATH

1. Fresh is better than frozen, frozen is better than canned: Opt for fresh, local and seasonal produce.
2. Always have a rainbow of veggies in your trolley: Each colour represents a different phytonutrient (naturally occurring compounds) that has specific health benefits.
3. Ocean raised fish is better than farmed: Only buy Australian fish and seafood that haven’t travelled from a far off country.
4. Avoid UFO's (Unidentified Food Objects): if you can’t pronounceable ingredients or they are full of numbers, put it back on the shelf and slowly back away.
5. Choose real foods and avoid processed (man-made) foods: If it didn’t walk on the land, swim in the sea or grow in the ground, rethink your choice.
6. Always buy organic for these dozen fruits and veggies: Apples, capsicum, celery, cherries, grapes, lettuce, broccoli, peaches, pears, potatoes, spinach and strawberries.
Oh yeah, and bring your own bags.

Tea and underarms

ALPHABET TUESDAYS

~T~ is for Tea

“There is no trouble so great or grave that cannot be much diminished by a nice cup of tea” –Bernard-Paul Heroux

Ahhh is there nothing better than a hot cup of tea? Unfortunately too much black tea is a diuretic and is quite acidic, so herbal tea is the way forward! Tea drinking is a wonderful way to top up your hydration levels as well as getting a gentle therapeutic effect. When possible I grow the herbs in my garden, otherwise I’ll buy organic tea. If you’re pregnant or on medications, have a quick chat to your naturopath first.

My Top 10 Medicinal Teas:

Ginger: morning sickness
Fennel: tummy upsets
Licorice: dry tickly cough
Chamomile: period pain
Green tea: weight loss
Dandelion root: liver detoxification
Rosehip: osteoarthritis
Thyme: sore throat
Lemon balm: anxiety
Passionflower: for sweet dreams

Think I might go and put the kettle on now! What tea are you loving right now?

ALPHABET TUESDAYS

*U* is for Under arm deodorants

Some antiperspirant deodorants contain aluminium ions that enter the skin cells, causing them to swell and blocks sweat from being secreted. This stops the natural elimination of toxins, which is what our bodies are actually designed to do.

Having aluminium in cells located close to the breast tissue and lymph nodes is not a comfortable thought for me, as the long-term effects of this has yet to be confirmed safe.

Let’s face it, many natural deodorants don’t work that well and try to mask odour with a herb garden full of essential oils. Some research shows that if you are swapping to a natural deodorant from an antiperspirant, you may initially need to reapply throughout during the day as years of blocked perspiration will need to clear. But then you’re right as rain for one daily application.

The deodorants our customers love the most?

MooGoo
Mayvers Neroli
The Body Crystal roll-on
MiEssence Organic Tahitian Breeze

What’s yours?

Be mindful of what you’re putting on your body. You’d be surprised about how much you actually absorb into your blood stream!

A bit extra on ECZEMA.

Hands up anyone who has eczema.... Hands up anyone who knows anyone with eczema.... Eczema would have to be one of the top 3 reasons people come into the shop. They are always looking for a new cream to try. That is, until we enlighten them with the REAL cause of eczema!

Treat the cause…
Even though eczema is seen on the skin, it is actually an INTERNAL problem because the skin is a reflection of our immune system and digestion. Over 70% of our immune system is located in the gut so we need to heal the gut to improve the reaction of our immune system. This means that you can try all the creams in the world but this only has a “band-aid” effect until you treat the cause. Psoriasis is different to eczema as it is an autoimmune disorder.

What happens…
1. Our body is exposed to an allergen eg. food, dust particles
2. Our mucous membranes that line the gut becomes inflamed causing the tight lining to become “leaky”
3. The allergen proteins wrongly enter the bloodstream rather than staying in the digestive tract
4. Our body’s immune system does not recognise these foreign objects and sets off an immune reaction
Result: eczema (dry, itchy, irritated skin), headaches, tiredness, moodiness

Can be aggravated by…
stress, seasons (Winter or Summer), heat, unnatural skincare products, unnatural cleaning products (washing powders), smoking, alcohol consumption.

Topically…
We’ve found that the products with the most positive feedback are:
© Billy Goat soap
© Massage coconut oil straight onto the skin
© Moogoo’s Eczema and Psoriasis Balm (or MSM Soothing Cream for babies/kiddies)
© Moogoo and Warbotanicals “Itchy and Scratchy” are wonderful shampoo and conditioners

A very soothing bath…
Cut off the foot from a pair of stockings, add one cup of rolled oats and 2 tablespoons of dried chamomile flowers and tie up the end. Let this soak in the bath water and gently rub over the body like a sponge. Add one tablespoon of almond oil or coconut oil to the bath water. You can also massage those oils into the skin as a moisturiser once you get out too.

Supplements…
© Fish oil: Most people take fish oil but aren’t nearly taking enough. Start with 5 capsules twice a day until symptoms clear up and then just maintain with 5 a day. Or consider a concentrated liquid like BioCeuticals Omega Sure liquid $29.95) where one tsp is equivalent to 6 standard capsules.
© Probiotics: to decrease inflammation, improve digestion, modulate the immune system and heal the gut lining. The strain of probiotics specific to eczema is Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG which is found in Ethical Nutrients Eczema Shield, Ethical Nutrients Inner Health Plus Powder For Kids and BioCeuticals Baby Biotic.

Diet…
© Eat lots of anti-inflammatory foods like fruit and vegies, brown rice, quinoa, ginger, garlic and turmeric.
© Eliminate allergens like dairy and wheat from the diet (one at a time) for a minimum of 4 weeks to observe any differences.
© Drink 2 litres of water every day to hydrate the skin and flush out any toxins.
© 70% OF PEOPLE WITH PSORIASIS ARE COELIACS!!! Have an allergy test at the immunologist or ask your GP for a blood test to see if you’re coeliac (gluten intolerant). If you continue eating foods that you’re intolerant to, your gut lining will constantly be inflamed and leaky.
© Fresh is best! Limit processed food such as boxed cereals, muesli bars, chips, cake, lollies and chocolate, icecream, biscuits and soft drink.
© Take as much stress off of your liver as possible such as limiting coffee, alcohol, fatty foods and smoking.

Lifestyle…
© Adapt to stress and anxiety better by doing at least one thing you enjoy on a daily basis such as walking on the beach, reading, getting a massage, having a bath or doing yoga. Stress will always be there but the way you manage it can change.
© Dry skin brushing before you jump in the shower or bath can help to exfoliate away old, dead skin cells.
© Get daily sun exposure to increase your vitamin D levels.
© Try wearing natural fibres like cotton or bamboo.
© Swap to natural cleaning products and laundry powders.

Don’t put up with being itchy!! It’s not something you have to live with! Pass this on to any itchy people you may know.
